With Super Bowl 48 coming up later today, SportsMatrix was asked to give its view and predictions on the big game for the fiverr blog. Fiverr is the world’s largest marketplace for services, starting at $5. You can see the original post here: http://blog.fiverr.com/super-bowl-sunday-come but this is what we had to say about this sporting spectacle:
The Super Bowl is almost here and many of our team members have been on the edge of their seats waiting for the big game.
Aside from the incredible sportsmanship and exciting half time show, it’s the advertisements and commercials that many of us here are waiting for. In addition to brushing up on our general sports knowledge, we have been researching and debating endlessly on who will win.
Sunday will see the biggest event of the American sporting calendar being played out, in front of one of the largest television audiences worldwide for a sporting occasion. We will also be keeping a keen eye on Super Bowl 48! This year the game is set to be played outdoors in New Jersey and will feature the Denver Broncos who are statistically the league’s leading offense against the Seattle Seahawks who are the league’s leading defense.
It promises to be a tight game as opposed to a one-sided blow out. A player to keep an eye on is legendary Peyton Manning, the quarterback of the Denver Broncos. He’s already won one Super Bowl and it’s argued that he’s one of the best quarterbacks ever to play the game. This season has seen him lead the league in touchdowns thrown with a phenomenal 55 successful strikes, 16 more than his nearest competitor, this despite the fact that he missed a whole season following neck surgery after a serious injury.
Manning will be going up against the number one defense led by Cornerback Richard Sherman, who had 8 interceptions – one of which he returned for a touchdown, as well as 16 passes defended. During the course of the regular season, Denver had the highest average passing yards per game at 340 yards with only 10 interceptions being thrown, whilst Seattle allowed the fewest passing yards at 172 yards per game, and intercepting the opposing quarterbacks on 28 occasions. This match reminds us of the 2011/12 Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Chelsea – a very prolific attack against a very stingy defense.
It is possible for a tight defense to prepare to play against a strong offense in a one off game and still come out on top. Even with defense being its strong point, a team doesn’t reach the final without some form of offensive capability as well. In the case of Chelsea, they managed to hold out for the regular part of the game and won in a penalty shoot-out.The question on Sunday is if Seattle’s defense can, as they tire, hold out the offensive machine which is Denver, while still managing to put points on the board themselves through the mercurial talents of their own up and coming quarterback, Russell Wilson.
A good sign for Seattle is that in previous meetings of first ranked teams, the defense has usually come out on top. Another factor to be considered is the weather with players and fans expecting it to be bitterly cold with a chance of rain on Sunday. This will be very significant, as when it rains, it is better to throw the ball than to run, as the offense knows where it is going and is thus harder for the defense to react. Two last thoughts before the prediction.
The Super Bowl is not just a sporting fixture; it is an entertainment juggernaut with over one hundred million people due to watch the half time show featuring Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The second thing is the commercials that are aired during the Super Bowl. Companies pay millions to have their ads shown and those ads are as eagerly anticipated as the game itself. Doritos, for example, let the public vote for their favorite ad and the winner is aired.
So, who’s going to win?
Our prediction for the winner can be seen here. As for a game prediction, we are going to go against the bookies and side with the history of defense against offense and say Seattle to edge a closer game than many people are expecting.
Who will you be rooting for this Sunday?
